Does anyone know of a good engineering workshop within a cycle ride of Haslar Marina Gosport that might be able to remove a sheared bolt for me? It is the bolt that goes through the centre of the slip rings on my wind generator so it is a delicate operation buried in the middle of them, and the bolt was a SS 10mm head so only 6mm dia thread into aluminium. The alternative is a new part which isn't in stock in the UK and costs ££££ . Thanks in advance

Thanks but I think that drilling the centre hole without a bench drill and vice will be really difficult without risking destroying the surrounding plastic insulation.

I have a mill lathe drill in Hamble, but getting an accurate centred hole to gradually drill out to the core of the M6 thread without damaging the aluminium might be difficult, but happy to give it a try, but you would have to bring the part to Hamble.

Marine Tech Engineering Ltd., Quay Lane, near the entrance to the Premier Marina there in Gosport. Can't remember the name of the bloke who runs the place - he's a youngish lad, but has a very good touch for this kind of thing. The friend who introduced me to him advised me to have a few quid cash on hand for the tea kitty if he does the job as a favour.

Thanks that's a kind offer, but I am a bit limited with traveling at the moment, just the bike!

That sounds just the job, thanks very much I will try him tomorrow morning.

I think you meant endeavour quay ? Quay lane is an industrial estate a few miles away.
I checked the address on maps before posting (perhaps I should have just posted a maps link) and it seems like Endeavour Quay is on Quay Lane. OTOH I should have been clearer, as it seems like Gosport / Hardway has two Quay Lanes.

Wow. In all the years of living here and all the directions ive given people I never knew there was a 2nd quay lane.
It's premiers land so it's also a little strange that you can street view yourself through their car park. .

So for reference Marine Tech Engineering don't really have any machining capability, just hand held drills etc. They suggested PRS engineering just around the corner opposite Halfords. They have all of the machine shop facilities and Roger there dealt with it within a few hours for a reasonable price which I was really grateful for.

I also needed the wires soldering back onto the slip rings which are big lumps of brass so need a lot of heat quickly to do a good job. After more phoning around I found Harry at HD Marine Services at the other Quay Lane, Quay lane boatyard near Hardway. They do work on alternators as well as general electrical and mechanical work so were familiar with this sort of work and Harry there was helpful and is aiming to complete it by tomorrow. So all looking good so far! I'll update the post when it is complete, fingers crossed!

So Harry at HD Marine did a great job soldering the wires back onto the slip rings. I have now reassembled the wind generator with the new charge controller board - which is why I took it apart in the first place - and it is all working great.

Harry also came out at a moments notice and picked me up and towed me to his yard when the outboard on my dinghy broke down, having just been "serviced" by another outboard specialist. He then took me back to my mooring in his rib, and looked at the outboard for me the next day. So I have had great service from him.
