There was a thread on the subject or emergency engine starters a while back. I notice that Aldi have these on sale next Thursday. I bought one last time they came around (for £19.99 then if I rememember correctly) and they are good. I use mine for cars, but if you keep one in the car you could always take it on board when using the boat.

As it would only be used very occsionally - when the boat's batteries give up - it would sit forgotten in the boot for a long time. Would it hold its charge? Or can it be kept trickle charged from the car?

I have a booster pack at home and rest assured its has been sitting in the garage charged ( not on charge ) for months and is still pretty much fully charged . Its one of those things 'when you need it you really do need it '.I have no idea if it would start a 4 lt D.O engine but I guess it would .Also mine inflates tyres /fenders

There will be more knowledgeable replies than this I suspect, but 3.8 litre diesel must need 500, ?650 cranking amps, maybe more. Even if the emergency starter can deliver that for a few seconds it desn't look like those cables could carry that current without dissipating a lot of power, and there would be more losses with the crocodile clip connectors. It might help an ailing boat battery but I doubt it would start the engine alone. At that price you cound consider buying one and trying it out.
