Engine start-up audible alarm

On starting my Yanmar engine there is an audible alarm until the engine is revved up in neutral. When the engine is returned to idle the alarm essentially goes quiet, but there remains a very slight noise rather like a faint metallic rattle. If a finger is placed over the opening of the alarm it is obvious that this is where the noise is coming from.

Is this indicative of a problem such as low charge rate, or too low idle speed ?

Any suggestions ?

you don't say which engine but there are several things that sound the buzzer on Yanmar engines

No charge warning, low oil pressure warning, high coolant temperature warning. and where applicable sail drive rubber seal.

All are associated with an warning light. If the buzzer is sounding and a warning light is not showing you may have a failed warning light bulb.

Of the above the oil pressure and no charge warning are the likely ones although a slight fault, not enough to light the bulb but enough to sound the buzzer quietly is possible on any of the circuits.

Systematic checking and elimination of the possibilities by disconnecting the various feeds to the buzzer one by one is the way forward I think.

There are circuit diagrams in the workshop manual that you can down load from http://www.motoren.ath.cx/

again vic has beaten me to an engine question!

I shall agree with vic BUT you sound like you are having a very similar problem to which i had around a month ago. My alarm was going off on first start, being a mechanic i checked the usual things, no problem could be found. I then took the panel off, problem found. Condenstation, and lots of it. (im currently living aboard) it was that cold that it was dripping off, after the engine had been running awile it got fainter and fainter and fainter untill no nose. Consequently i dont have a problem now, partly because i have a new panel (im greedy and wanted the deluxe version!) and partly to weather warming up. I tryed the panel the other as im selling it, no alarm what so ever!

Thanks for the link to the manual, excellent info.

Engine is 4JH3 TBE 75HP with shaft drive, not saildrive. Oil pressure, gauge shows ok; temperature appears ok, gauge indicates slow warm-up from cold; charge light goes out after start.

Noise from buzzer is quite faint, I had a hard time tracking down where the noise was actually coming from !

Just discovered that there are 2 buzzers, one in the main switch panel, and a second in the rear of the pilot house close to the exterior steering position. It is the second buzzer that is going off.

The buzzers are coupled and have feeds from oil pressure, water temp, alternator, and engine hours counter (?).

My guess at this time must be alternator charging, so out with the test meter !

Thanks for inputs.

My 4JH4E squeaks until the revs come up high enough to put out the light on the alternator/battery warning. It doesn't squeak slightly after that.
