I intend to buy an AGM engine start battery for a Volvo 2003. Trouble is, I don't know the recommended CCA & I can't find it in the engine documentation that I have. Can anyone advise?
I know the MD2030 manual quotes recommended AH for the battery which seems nonsense to me if it's just used for starting. However the VA or power rating of the starter IS quoted which is a start though the peak current is likely to be greater than the average power/12.
All of which is not much help.
It did occur to me to compare starter power -v- battery CCA fo a car. But googling didn't throw up any useful data.
Now thinking of buying a DC current clamp to see what the actual current used is.
I have a Volvo 2003, from new my starter battery was 75AH I replaced through old age and replaced it with an 80AH (couldn't find 75AH)....Must admit I have never had any starting issues. Hope this helps
So maybe if you want to buy an atypical battery (like an AGM), you could simply look up the CCA of a typical 80AH diesel start battery, and match that...
I bought the Red Flash 1100 AGM for my Volvo2003 (although the 1000 would have done) I bought it because it is small & fitted in my engine compartment so I could combine my other two batteries as domestics thus doubling my domestic capacity.I bought it from Merlin Powerstore people at LIBS.However if you are looking for a straight replacement a battery of circa 80AH will do the job.
If you do not have any AGM's at present consider your charging regime i.e.alternator regulator oand/or mains charger settings.
If I remember correctly the starter motor is listed as 1kWatt. This means it will draw approx. 85 Amps during operation. Let's say the startup current (current at the moment the starter motor starts turning) is 50% higher => Any CCA above 150A is enough. Even a standard 56 Ah battery from a car can supply this.
It's recommendable to buy a battery that can withstand long idle times (little self discharge).
Save your money. Got to your cheapest local motor factor/car parts shop/Halfords and buy the battery recommended for the smallest diesel engined car you can think of.
I too have a RedFlash battery. It is sealed, its small bout 4 by 4 by 8 inches and llegedly can be fitted any way up. Mine has worked fine for three years now. Do remember that they have small termi als which will need special tags and a very gd crimp tool.
I fitted a standard automotive sealed 60AH battery as the starter battery for my 2003T in my HR352 about 3 years ago. I have just sailed round the world with it and have not had any problems so far. Hope this helps.
