I only got my boat last July and it's Ynamr diesel has a major (£1300) service then.

I'm planning on changing the oil for the first time, thought I ought to replace the fuel filter & oil filter at the same time.

Should the impeller be changed every year - or just when it breaks?

Adivce would be appreciated.

Yanmar YSM 8 horse joba.

If you wait 'til it breaks you may need to spend some hours finding all the bits somewhere in the heat exchanger or worse still in the water injector into the exhaust. But in 8 years and 40,000 miles I have changed the impeller on a Yanmar 4JH2E just twice and it has been intact both times. I change the impeller on the Onan each year, it usually has splits and twice over the same time span I have had to play hunt the missing blade. Good Luck!

Gidday

I am in the same situation - boat with 8hp 1GM10 Yanmar for just over one year - changed the oil recently.

I used a pump to pump the old oil out and was a bit disappointed as how much I managed to get out. I had planed to measure it and the new oil going in (especially to half full).

I had a bit of trouble getting the new oil filter tight enough and had to make a custom tool as the off the shelf filter spanners would not fit in the area I had to work in.

Once I removed the old filter I got a small dribble of oil about 1/3 of a cup which might be due to my lack of skill with the pump.

I believe there is a practice of running the engine for a short time to loosen up the oil , I did not do this.

I am not very experienced with engine maintenance so tackle one job at a time.

Sorrry - if this seems a bit lame - I do not know YSM model - and I may get corrected - but as I understand it the bung under the engine is not for draining the oil like you would with a car.

£1300 for a service, YSM 8???

Ted.

[/ QUOTE ]Easily... for "major" service (fuel pump, injector, head gasket and valve job, oil seals etc.

Routine service of oil change and filters I would have thought £100 tops (£40 parts and £60 labour - max)

Yep... Son't get me started on that. Apparently they had to lift the engine out to examine & repack the sterngland greaser... Most of that was labour.

I was more frustrated they'd quoted a few hundred and not called to give me the option to take her somwhere else.

RHP Marine, Cowes, IOW.

Genral impression I have got from many yachties is to avoid the place.

I won't be back there again, but you may have a different experience...
