Hi,
Does anybody know what is the recommended amount of man hours for filter changes on a Volvo penta mad 42 engine including the diesel filter, fuel filter, and air filter.

It would be nice to know if there is like a standard industry rate obviously give or take a little on each end

Thanking you in advance

Danny

It will be X hours or annually, whichever comes first. Most private boats don't do X hours, so annual is considered the norm.

X is likely to be 100 hours but don't quote me.

Think the OP was enquiring about the time taken to do the service / change

Oops. I do all DIY and for the above Inc. Oil (assuming it's warm) I would allow myself 2.5 hours. That said I don't rush the job and usually includes a sandwich !

Oops, so he was. Can't answer that i,'m afraid, as I do all my own servicing. The op also quotes diesel and fuel filters as separate items. I wonder if one of them should be oil and if so he would need to add oil change to the list as there is no point in doing one without the other.

Don't think there will be any such thing as an industry standard as every boat even with the same engines will have different amounts of accessibility.
So first you have to pay the time for an engineer to get to where your boat is, then he has to find your keys and open the boat up, then ideally warm the engines for an oil change. Possible dismantle furniture, move seats, dinghies, kit etc.. to gain access. Then change the parts, re bleed fuel system and test etc...
So could take a couple of hours or could take all day! Most people who can, therefore do it themselves.

Simple job but silly things like pumping the oil out can take an hour per engine just watching the Pela pump do it's thing. Then there's the inevitable oil spill taking the oil filters off. I cant begin to tell you what a faff it proved to me to try and get oil out of the bilge. Real simple jobs but just chew time. I'd do those myself if you have the option, it's not rocket science.
