In this months PBO (page 114) there is a mention of scale blocking the engine waterways.
Does any one know what the scale is made of and more importantly is there any thing that can be used to safely devolve it?

Normally scale consists of salt or lime residue,,,,if you can find a Janitorial supply shop you should be able to buy at a reasonable price.. 5l of descaling acid as used for descaling pressure washers or steam cleaners.... make a closed circuit of your cooling system with a 5Gal drum of solution, and run your engine until the cooling circuit is full of the mixture, switch off, go and have a couple of pints, and some lunch, come back and flush cooling with fresh water and problems should be solved..Caution... Descaling acids are often Hydrocloric based although there used to be some that were Oxalic based which was much safer.... if the former rubber gloves and goggles...follow the destructions..

Go with care, if its an old block the scale could holding things together. If I had £5 for every HE that had to be plugged or cement boxed after a chemical cleaning I would be a far richer man.
