An update to the previous thread.

Firstly thanks for all the input, it helped rule out duff options and stopped us wasting time on dead ends. Today we located the problem, a previous engineer had over tightened the bolts in the exhaust manifold and created a very slightly oval profile to the exhaust outlet. What made it so difficult to spot was that most of the leaking exhaust fumes were escaping underneath.

It's off with the heat exchanger and by tomorrow it should have been ground flat and on with new gaskets.

A result, and thanks for the help getting there.
 
I guess we just got lucky with anther set of eyes looking for it.

All back on again and purring like a good Thornycroft should. No fumes and thanks for all the help.
