To all the technocrats out there. Have to take one engine out to renew bearings at output shaft inside bellhousing. Am I correct in assuming engine is only mounted on forward two feet and at the rear on rubber ring in transom housing. Volvo AQAD 40B and 280 outdrive.

This is my first ever reply on the forum so I hope it works. You don't take the engine out to replace the drive shaft bearings (2 off) you remove the outdrive then there is 1 circlip, a shaft seal then another circlip, you then pull the shaft out. This is how I did both of mine. I also fitted grease nipples to the screw down type grease points inside on the engine to transom shield housing so I could pump the grease in to prevent having to change the bearings again.
I had a pair of these engines/outdrives for 18 years so if you require any more info let me know.

Glad you got in first cos I was going to say that it had to be engine out. Volvo must have changed the design between the 280 and 290 cos with the later ones, the inner bearing has to go in from the other end as it sits against a shoulder in the bell housing and has an inner seal.

Hope you are right and as Kev B said, great first post.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. I had thought that it must be possible to do from the rear but was assured that it was an engine out task. Will PM you if I may if I need more info.

Having another look, it may be the later type as it appears to be rebated at nearest grease seal. May hoik out the grease seal for a better look, as its got to be replaced anyway. Thanks all.

Re: Leg or Engine.

Just to add a bit of confusion one of the bearings in my 280T has been grumbling away nicely since the boat was purchased 4 years ago.Have been "researching" doing this job on and off ever since.Have been told two totally different stories regarding this repair. One states leg off only, the other engine out job.
To add to the mix have been told one version has threaded hole drilled in shaft to enable bolt to be attached to draw shaft out.Otherwise if shaft is stuck in nothing for puller to grab hold of with leg only off .Decent detailed diagrams are very difficult to find, half decent ones are here 280 Drive .My transom shields do not have a grease nipple/cap.Do let me know how you get on.Have found most web based info on this subject and have got to do mine at some point prob during next gaitor change.

Re: Leg or Engine.

I think maybe Volvo carried out product improvement, which didn't find it's way into assembly diagrams. (Or not the ones I've seen anyway). When I have made sense of it all and done the job, whichever way, I'll let you know. Photos too, thanks all.

Re: Leg or Engine.

had a word with a Penta trained technician and he advised that it is an engine out job to sort the drvie shaft bearings. I also checked my workshop manuals and same thing applies. the hole in then of the shaft isn't threaded, or at least wasn't on the last few I have looked at so no way to pull the shaft out.

The bearings also have to pressed into the bell housing which can't be done in place.

sorry to give bad news but you are up for an engine out.

I had the same on my V8 in the last boat and I used the timethe engine was out to clean and paint all the bay, clean and paint the engine and give enverything a good sort out.

Cheers

Thanks Kev!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thought you may have made a comment about the pics on my other post.....you said you wanted to see her up and flying.

Didn't make it to Weymouth, we lost time due to weather and it was looking likely to get worse that weekend so we got to Salcome and called it quits. great time though and the boat was brilliant. Engines didn't miss a beat all the way up or back.

Cheers mate.

Re: Leg or Engine.

The diagrams on stem to stern def seem to indicate that one of the bearings goes in from the engine end /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
