Was coming in over langstone bar, engine died.

I was cruising at 2800rpm.
Engine tone lowers, rpm sounds slower, but rpm on gauage still shows 2800rpm.
No "hunting", rpm just dropped - engine did not cut of, decrease in power.

How can i tell the signs of water, air or muck in the fuel system?

ie. Does water in the fuel make the engine do slightly different things to muck/air etc?

Iam going to change the filters, but just wondered if by the engine signs we can work out if it's air, water or muck?

thanks all as always.

Your post posses more questions than your explanation tells us.

Water normally stops an engine, where as muck or air will decrease power but also revs.

What type of filter do you have - does it have a glass bowl?

If it does, have you inspected it for cr*p or water both will show up!

Is the air filter clean?

Was the engine getting a good supply of air?

Was the engine temp gauge reading normal?

I must admit the bit I don't understand and have no explanation for is why the power dropped off but the revs didn't!!!!

Hi boatman,

thanks for the reply.

Yes I have a glass volvo pre filter. - looks' clear, no water/dirt.

Have not looked at the air filter yet.

Dont have a engine temp gauge - but water was coming out the engine fine, over heat light was not on.

A error code did come up on the panel, but i dont have the workshop manual for the md2020, the error code has a 5 in and a few odd characters, thats all the can remember :-(

The engine rev's did drop, say 50, then 100, then 500, but Iam sure it wasnt doing 2800rpm, it just didnt sound like it.

I'll change all the filters in the week.

Also, just been speaking to my dad, should the pre filter be installed below the level of the tank - our's isnt? My dad reckons it should as the pre filter is gravity fed?

thankyou :-)

check to see if you have a rope or some monofilament around your prop.

Seconded.

You should not need to get straight into water.

If my Yanmar picks up a rope and stalls, it can lock the gear in forward and be a right git to pull out of gear, if at all.

If you can get it out of gear, try rotating the shaft by hand, both me and Talbot are expecting you to find this locked up solid, it wont be just a bit tight, if the engine stalled it will be locked up tight.

it is a saildrive, so can't check the shaft.
Engine only has 70 hours on it, about 2 years old.
Should the injectors need testing?
