Please tell me if it is ok to fit the 1GM10 Yanmar engine instrument panel in (22ft sailboat) my open cockpit.as I do not see where else I can put it an still see it properly,it comes with a seal to be placed between the box shape panel an the bulkhead, would very much like some advice.

Had the same problem and I put it inside the companionway as shown here . Yes, I know it's not ideal, but I can easily reach in to start the engine up when I need to, and the alarms are audible. I did, of course, think hard about an outside location, but it really needs to be protected. At the least, it would need to be in a box, let in to the cockpit moulding and protected by a sliding or pivoting acrylic cover.

I put the panel in the cockpit, and the only problem I have had in 20 plus years is with the start switch. If it is not well greased and turned every now and then, with the power off or on, it seizes up.
As a precaution I have a second start switch in parrallel with the panel one, mounted inside the engine bay. This is very convienient when bleeding the engine, and perhaps will save the day if there are problems with the outside one.

Mine is in the cockpit and has been for seven years with no mishaps. I've never thought of greasing the key as it always seem to go in and out with no problem.

The dealers said that i might get problem with the alarm whistle corroding and not working but as a spare buzzer is available for a pound or so from Maplins it didn't bother me.

I can start the engine when I want and when its running can see the red lights if they come on - you might not hear the buzzer above the noise of the engine if its tucked away
