Hi all, can you tell me if i can use any 25w40 oil for my mercruiser 200MR or should i go for the quicksilver oil, is there a difference?

Engine oils……always a juicy topic guaranteed to invoke controversy.

I don’t know the Mercruiser engine so here’s my thoughts in general.

Is the engine within warranty and/or do you need a service stamp to keep it. If so, use the outrageously expensive proprietary brand.

Otherwise, what is the manufacturer recommended viscosity range and specification. Match these with any other decent looking brand, including those sold by major chain auto spares and bicycle shops, and spend the difference on beer tokens, or give to the collection box at your local church.

Generally, unless you know differently, you will never see the extremes of temperature, pressure or duty cycle as when tested and approved by the engine maker. If you change it once a season, filter, too, there will be very little stress induced within oil.

Additives are something that I try to steer away from. Not always sure how said additive may react negatively with any other components within the engine.
