Engine Mounts

I feel its time to renew my engine mounts, the engine is a Yanmar 3GMD 20 Hp.

1, Anyone ever done this themselves ?
2, Do i need to use genuine Yanmar parts ?

I did this myself earlier this year on an 18hp Perkins Perama M20 not too hard- bought engine parts from a firm called Robush from memory at much less than Volvo/ Perkins price, You need to make sure they are the right "hardness" but they can advise on that - I replaced them one by one jacking engine up with bit of wood and making sure the new one went in at same height as the old one if you get my drift. And then when all completed turned the propshaft to make sure no run-out etc. I am sure others will be able to advise on importance and ways of checking alignment etc.

There was an artical in PBO about 15 months ago. There are alternative mounts for yanmar made bu Polyflex in Australia but with a uk agent . They are alot cheaper than the Yanmar originals. I have not done this myself but watched an engineer do it by jacking up the engine enough to remove the old mounts. Not too difficult but the alignment afterwards is a bit tricky .The UK agents are Southern Cross marine in Salisbury

The mount hardness is often stamped on the base.Once you have that and the engine weight ( divided by four) you can select a mount with the correct dimensions from Robush at http://www.robush.co.uk/products/trelleborg_range/default.cfm

I did exactly the same for a Perkins Perama some years ago. I used Trelleborg direct using my company account and they were identical to the original mounts & much cheaper. Trelleborg took over the original Metalastic A/V mounts. I hadn't heard of Robush before but they obviously do the same range.

The only problem with changing Yanmar mounts for another brand is that the spacing of the mounting holes may be different, I think Polyflex are one of the few that are the same spacing as Yanmar but are almost as expensive as Yanmar mounts.

I have just re-engined my boat with a Mitsubishi based Sole engine. The mounts Sole use are exactly the same as Yanmar mounts. When I did a bit of research into who actually make them I found they are made in Europe, and if my memory serves me correctly, in Spain. Sorry but unfortunately I no longer have their details. They are made in a number of Shore Hardness ratings, so its possible to match the Yanmar branded mounts. If you look at the Sole web site under accessories you will find that their flexible mountings type E are identical to Yanmar mounts. I wager that if bought from either via Sole or an agent for the actual manufacturer they would be cheaper than Yanmar branded mounts.
