Just looking through the post on ascending the mast, I'm reminded of an ingenious fisherman's answer to the problem of lifting his engine out onto the deck. He had no chain hoist, so we watched with interest as he rigged a tripod on deck over the engine space. Then a block with a hefty rope to which he attached a number of tail ends over both sides. Then he started tying on the 20kg railway chairs we use for anchoring gear, and lowering them overboard. When he reached aproximate equilibrium he lifted the engine with one hand and positioned timbers across the hatch to rest it on, with the other.
