Just bought a Yanmar 2GM20 - any installation tips? My first problem is how to get engine into boat (ashore). Is the boom / rig up to taking the weight (9M Achilles)?

Also, any recommendations for prop suppliers - reckon I need a beefier one - need to get the correct one.

Thankyou.

you dont say what was in before this will make a big difference to next bit you will have to check that bearers fit if old engine is flywheel at front thethe bearers will be narrower than 2gm

dont even think about not changing prop chances are that it will not fit from thought that you may have to change it

why spend all that time money effort and spoil it

you might be able to use boom etc main haliyard to stop round boom etc but it is a fair weight to live up that hight consider potential damage to topside is cradle ok for stability etc
price a lift it might work out cheaper in the long run

Common practice to use boom ......

Note :
a) Pass main halyard back to topping lift point at aft end of boom. Gives stronger 'topping lift'
b) Attach another rope or pass the main sheet to nearest winch to assist in topping the boom
c) Turn main sheets 'upside-down' so that haul is coming from top block, not bottom. (Yes - I know that this is not 'with' the direction of pull, but is far easier than the lead over the boat side !!!!)
d) Top the boom to the point that the sheets to lift the engine are plumbed directly overhead the engine.

Ask the supplier to recc'd the proper prop ...... !

Lifting with the boom is ok but check how strong the gooseneck is. I have lifted several 2GM's by the boom. Life will be a lot easier if you can get hold of a chain hoist rather than using your mainsheet. A small half ton one will do. They are cheap to hire for a day.
With the prop contact "Lancing Marine" and they will tell you the correct size you need. They advertise in all the yacht mags. Also there are plenty of companies in the mags who can tell you what you need.
Before you lift it in check the size and height of the engine bed. From the dimension drawing Yanmar supply you can have the bed ready for the engine to fit straight in. This is assuming you are fitting it to a prop shaft and not fitting a sail drive. Also take you time, set the engine on the bed and align it before you drill any holes for the mounting bolts. A mistake made earlier can often take ages to sort.
PS I have found the Yanmar mount have a settling in period of two weeks, so don't be suprised if the alignment goes out after you first set it up.

Sept/ Oct PBO gave a few tips about fitting a 2 GM ( Diesel Doctor)..dont mess about putting the engine in to mark the bolt positions ..make a jig up with the engine bearers fitted..that will give the correct positions for the bolts. and ask PBO for a copy of the Photo Of the jug I used if you want to see what it looks like,( they havent sent 'em back yet!)....
and YES I wrote that article for PBO and it covers all your questions
