interested in getting my engine RPM etc to show on my Raymarine screen...engines are 1999 year Yanmar LP6 so all cable controlling not EDC or electronic throttles and stuff so I don't think I can just plug in a black box to an ECU somewhere (nice if I can!!!).

I have VDO instruments showing RPM, pressures, temps and the like...

Anyone got any ideas on how to make the magic happen?

You need digital signals as found on the latest motors, and yours is analogue so they won't talkas they are.
But a company called Maretron do an adapter which converts J1939 engine data to NMEA 2000 which might work for you.

Interesting.

I have a 4HLA-STP which EP Barrus say is not interfacable with my Raymarine as it does not have a NEMA cambus

So any help appreciated

They are absolutely correct. its only the new fully electronic diesels that have CAN BUS.
So what you need is an analogue to digital converter, so it will talk to your Raymarine gear. These are available as you can send data from your fuel tank sender, and engine instruments to Raymarine via NMEA.
To illustrate the previous generation of engines use the equivalent of semaphore (where you can see the blokes arms moving the flags up and down, analogue signal) and the latest generation use morse code where the light is either on or off (digital signal) and you need something to translate the signal for you.
Maretron make these converters for Raymarine, but I guess there may be others out there too.
