I have been trawling the internet for information about my mercedes om636 engine including American sites and German ebay. Any how the question of engine hours seems to be discussed here fairly frequently and I found the link below where the time between rebuilds of a mercedes om636 is quoted (called nwd by thermo king). Anyway it seems someone gets 40000 to 50000 hours between rebuilds! I assume they must be running constantly to clock up those times but still amazing and shows 5000 hours on a boat is not that many but is perhaps more an indication of the harsh use they get.

As Rossyant implied, not so much hard use as the environment they often live in. Keep 'em dry and coddled and they last much longer.

That and the kind of running they get. Lots of short bursts in and out of harbours, never getting up to working temperature. Running well below their designed revs out of misguided belief that this is good for them. Diesels like to work steadily and continuously - I imagine this is exactly what they get when running refrigeration compressors, so not surprised those guys are getting good life out of them.
