Engine Hours Read Out

I have a Chaparral 180SS with a 3.0 Mercruiser inboard and noticed yesterday what appears to be a flashing "B" or "8" on the left hand side of my engine hours read out. Can't find any reference to it in either the boat or engine manuals.

Any ideas what it's there for?

it is probably an hour glass symbol to show the hour meter is working, looks a bit like an 8 or a B, "should have gone to Spec Savers"

It is indeed an egg timer. If flashing it means that your hours are being logged. Nothing to worry about.
