Went to move the boat to it's swinging mooring and started the engine perfectly normally. I let it run at faster than idle speed for a couple of minutes to warm it up and then put it back to tick over. The engine started to falter (last time it stopped and was difficult to restart) so I increased the revs - it picked up but like a previous occasion, it started passing considerable smoke from the exhaust. This soon cleared and everything was back to normal. I motored out of the marina and drifted on tick over while I pulled in my fenders and put away the mooring lines and it ticked over very smoothly. What's going on?

over filled at oil change ???????

It's a Beta 14, less than 50 hrs - this has happened twice in a row........The first time I was on engine for about an hour, after such an occurrence..........

What engine?

Its a new Beta Marine 14hp. It's a puzzle that twice in a row I've had this faltering/stalling, followed by copious smoke which then clears to normal running. Until the next time......

As other has said - air in the injection lines - sounds like you have a little leak somewhere allowing air in to the fuel lines - Kubuto do not self bleed - the air causes the miss fire as the injector cannot "break" due to low fuel pressure, increase the revs before she stalls and maybe she will keep running but smokey again because of an air bubble in the injection line preventing a good "break". Basically the fuel dribbles into the chamber rather than being sprayed in. If you are lucky the bubble will pass through and all works fine until next time. - check all connections and filters for leaks especially on the suction side of the lift pump.
