I have a control lever with a red button. Never having had an inboard engine before could anyone tell me how to operates it. I have worked out that forward position is increase revs forward and back position is increase revs astern. Presumably the red button is something to do with neutral. Could someone enlighten me please.

I would expect it to be arranged such that if you hold the button in then move the lever (either way) you'll increase engine revs without engaging gear, i.e. keeping it in neutral.

I agree that's the usual arrangement. Normally you would press the red button in and move the lever forward or aft to provide increased revs when you start the engine. Once the engine has started/warmed up then bring the lever upright and the button should pop out again.

Except that quite often the red button does not "pop out again"
You then have to jiggle the lever around until it does.

If you don't realise this has happened, the shore lines have been let go, and you then confidently open the throttle to go ahead/astern awkward happenings may occur /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

You too! I managed to leap from the stern onto the pontoon holding a warp but it was a near thing. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I didn't really look for a cure as it was a bit tatty. Mine was a Volvo lever but I replaced it with the Morse MNS lever (for sailing boats) which doesn't have the button. You pull the whole lever out to select neutral.
