Engine choices

If given the choice of engine to be housed in a 40-45 ft displacement hull , what would you go for ? merc , volvo , etc ?

Had a Perkins M92B fitted last year in our 45' displacement steel yacht. Very pleased.

Iveco. The 6-cylinder 120PK version would be great for your purposes. No complicated and potentially troublesome engine electronics to worry about. Much cheaper to buy and maintain than the others you mention and built to last for years.

Cummins, all marine spares are available from their truck dealers at truck prices. Cummins is also the cheapest for all spares.

A perkins sabre m135 should do the trick, no turbo just good old fashioned british engineering parts are very cheap too.

Just make sure its an automotive based engine - thus lots of widely available inexpensive spares and plenty of engineers with expertise on them. For inexpensive units that are easy to maintain, Ford based engines still take some beating.
