Hello I am about to become the owner of a cobra 850 which has a very tired yanmar yse 12 engine. What I would like to ask of you all is, which engine would be best suited to replace it so that I don't have to make to many modifications to the existing engine bed.Thank you.

Have a look at the Beta BZ482 (13.5HP) or the BD722 (20HP). The Vega Club have used over 100 of the BZ482 without a problem. Beta seem to care about their customers and take an interest. Service and backup is second to none. I would have thought that the 13.5HP was big enough but the 20HP is only 150mm longer for the extra piston.

Agree, the Beta 13.5 should be powerful enough. It pushes my 28ft 4 ton Stag at near 7 knots in flat water and cruises at 5 knots a little over 2000 revs.
See my website for a few of the things you need to think about.

Thank you Steve for your reply.I did check out your site and was impressed.Would you admit to the odd nervous moment as the old volvo was being manhandled out of your pride and joy?I too have to replace the headlining but that will be a job for another day.

Absolutely, that was the worst part of the project. The rest was just step by step, measure 10 times and (hopefully) fit once. When it's all done and working it's a great feeling of accomplishment.

stick a yanmar in. I did last year, replaced everything. don't bother with micky mouse companys who cant be bothered to phone you back. I tried Nannin & Beta. just gave phone nubers of boatyard dealers who just wanted to make money.

I have a Cobra 850, that was re-engined a year before we bought her, with a Beta 28. Personally, I think that the 28 is a bit overkill, BUT it does the job and does it well. Service levels from Beta are superb...they actually seem to care about people who own their engines...we didn't get a handbook for the engine, (the previous owner had lost it!), a quick phone call to Beta, and one was in the post f.o.c.

If you want a few more details, pm me.
