I have a large engine bay that is currently fitted with automatic dry powder extinguishers. Halon replacement type do not seem to come in big enough sizes for my boat. However I remember using a system a few years ago with a pressurised plastic hose that you p clipped all around the engine bay that had a gaseous extinguisher on one end. If a fire started it would melt plastic pipe at nearest point and the entire contents of the extinguisher would be dumped right at the heat source. Problem is I cant remember what it was called or who made it - anyone else know or has something similar ????

How big is your boat? Sea-Fire do them (FM200 FD series) for engine rooms up to 42 cu metres, and don't forget you can subtract the volume of your engines and ancilliaries from the room measurements to calculate the size required.

its a fairline targa 43 - engine bay is @ 4 *3* 1.5m but it extends back under the tender garage where the geny lives which is another 4*3*1m. so @ 30m3 ish need to subtract tanks and engine volume. thanks for the leads

I am sure Seafire do them for that size engine room, you can have more than one unit.

I have a 10kg auto plus a pull wire for manual firing. I would not like auto only.

The trouble with powder is if it goes off and the engines are running you can do serious damage.

With my auto/manual system an alarm goes off at the helm warning that the unit is shortly going to shut down the engine just prior to activating the unit in the engine space. I can override this shut down with a switch at the helm unit.

It is a Seafire installation.
