Engine Anode

Do fresh water cooled engines have / need a sacrificial anode?
I hope I am right in thinking that they don't, as I have not found one on my engine!
Would / should there be one on the heat exchanger?

There is one on my Mercruiser Diesels at the heat exchanger according to the handbook.

Mine has one in the heat exchanger. It is a Lombardini. Perhaps if you say which is your engine, some forumites would be able to give you a definite answer, including where to look.

Probably has a Bowman heat exchanger. Check with Lancing Marine.
