I have recently purchased in Western Australia a ferro-cement Peter Ibold designed 35ft Endurance Ketch, which was built in 1976. I am aware that a number of these were built by Windboats of Wroxham in the 70s and I am interested in contacting any owners in Europe of the design, in any construction method.

I have posted some info and queries re my own 1971 Enurance 48, also built by Windboats of Wroxham, on one of the other forums. I think it is in the Yachting and Boating Forum, which can be got at via the pop-up box at the bottom of the index page. email me at tuscair@eircom.net if you have any problems. Lets talk.

Thanks for your reply. I found the previous entries.

I omitted to mention that my boat was built in a yard in Hobart Tasmania and sailed over to W Australia about 14 years ago. A lot of ferro-cement boats have been built in Australia and N Zealand by amateurs, some of which have been less than attractive. Many people built far too large hulls and were unable to complete the interior and fitting out. Also, many amateurs skimped on materials and finish, but well made boats are excellent.

The 35 has a very pretty hull and the extensive clear foredeck area is great. Mine has an aft cabin, which is not such a good thing as I think the boat is a bit small for it.

I have recently bought mine and the previous owner cruised her extensively up and down the WA coast, mostly single handed. You may not be familiar with the area, so have a look at an atlas, but remember the vast distances involved! Also, the prevailing wind is a SW sea breeze, onshore unto a coast which is largely uninhabited, apart from small settlements and not many safe harbours, so boats have to be pretty tough. I keep her in Cockburn Sound, about 40 kms south of Perth.

I have been able to find some useful books on ferro-cement construction (one of which features a photo of the 35) and I will get their titles for you when I am next on board (weekends only, unfortunately) if you would like me to - they may help with your problem of the cappings. You may like to reply on my EMail address pjohnst@iinet.net.au
