With the likes of David Attenboroughs program on climate change and the ever increasing public awareness of this issue do you think that in a few years time there is going to be a big backlash into the use of big (and small) mobos for pleasure use?
Is red diesel etc the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended)?
Will we be banished?

Ps i have also posted this on the red diesel forum but thought it better discussed here.

The end is nigh!

interesting program last night, I would have thought that some clever scientist could find a use for all that carbon.
As for boats and engines in general there must be an end at some point either for pollution reasons or there is just no fuel left but on the brighter side, did you see the fith gear show recently with the hydrogen powered car? looks like a promising option! and zero polution. They dont sound as good though!

Hydrogen, zero pollution? At point of use perhaps - but it takes quite a bit of power to generate the hydrogen in the first place... Best hope that they get building some nuclear powerstations.

Most good inventions or developments are generated as the result of some crisis or other that needs fixing. As oil become more scarce and / or more expensive, so the money will be found for R&D for alternative solutions.

I don't think leisure boating will ever be banned per se, but self regulation will come about as the cost rises to prohibitive levels.

Then we'll all become raggies /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I wouldn't know what do with one.... I'm only guessing here, but you hang some sort of material up?

All a load of crap!

During Earths history it has been hotter / colder / had more / less / no CO2 and started from a point of zero oxygen.

The Earth will survive inspite of anything we do to ruin / protect it.

Life will also survive in some form or other. All the global warming lobby are worried about is the effect this will have on HUMAN life. Our innings has already gone beyond any other species previously, and we could be snuffed within a matter of months if Yellowstone does what it is now overdue to do.

I suugest you continue to burn whatever fossil fuels you can afford whilst you are still here to do so. The black stuff will be little use to primeval slimes, spiders and ants.

I'm guessing that you did'nt see the program in question, in this it stated that where they were developing the car they had a surplus of abundant hydro-electric power, so truly low emissions !

I really must read my post BEFORE I press that button !?

You're right - I didn't see the programme, however there does seem to be a view that hydrogen-based power is the way forward and I'm not sure that it helps all that much.

Maybe, but will the masses think this? What about media and consequently political pressure?

[/ QUOTE ]

The masses aren't right by right-of-might
The media is never right
The politicians only think they're right if the media say they are and the masses vote for them.

So that leaves us .......................shagged

[/ QUOTE ] Hope you're right. All depends on how hard the financial screw is turned I suppose. When you think that a modest twin-engined cruiser with average use consumes nearly as much fuel (and generates as much CO2) in a twelve month as FOUR modest family saloon cars. Given the politics of envy so often displayed by this appalling Govt of ours, we may be lucky to keep our boats let alone red diesel!!!

Yes

There's plenty of uranium.

Hydrogen isn't actually "used" its just a means of transmission, starts as water and finishes as just as much water.

But these cretins who are determined to reduce us all to subsistance farming and mass starvation will not agree to using nuclear.

Did anyone see the programme on the coal seam fires in China.
They start spontainiously, and just left to burn out, but generate more polution than all the motor vehicles in the Unites States. But then if we buy it in finished from the Chinese, we are not poluting the world, they are, we can buy our electricity from the French nuclear plant, we are clean.
Has anyone heard this government talk of tax breaks for yachts, or motor sailers? are aero rig cats the route for future cruisers, wind when there, or eletiric motors from batteries when no wind. Batteries can be topped up by wind or sun, or a small ic engined gen set for reliable long range, providing a continuous average power supply.
Our problem is that seeing to be green is more inportant than being green.

Re: Hear Hear

The dinosaurs I believe lasted a whole heap longer in their ruling of the Earth.

The pollution thing and the security stuff will all be used for control of one kind or another.

There's more oil than most know about, except for oil surveyors and the oil companies. The same is true (I believe NOTE!) for alternate clean technologies.

Look at it this way, say you were part of a multitrillion dollar industry, that has virtual control over the lifestyle and choices of most of the planet-are you going to vote to allow alternatives to oil to be developed outside of your profitable control? Just a thought. Ok, that's a bit conspiracy theorist-doesn't mean it's wrong though /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

"twin-engined cruiser with average use"
Some back of an envelope numbers................
Audi estate.Last 12 months. 650 gallons petrol.( fuel receipts)
Princess 33.Twin diesel.Last 12 months boat in use all year.120 hours @ 2.5 GPH. 300 Gallons diesel.( boat log).
This does not include the wifes car. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ah! But I was talking about running the ships main engines, not just the bl*ody generator /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Back of my envelope reads
Boat: 100hrs @ 10 gph =1000gls
Car: 12000miles @ 40mpg =300gls
All modest figures/averages etc
