Encouraging future sailors II

Harry did his RYA Stage 1 & 2 and passed both. He had a great week and learned lots of practical skills as well as theory. Thanks to Bewl Water Outdoor Centre.

Just one observation. Perhaps considering the response and opposition we got from his Primary school it was no surprise to find that he was the only student from a state school on the course, everyone else was from private schools who had already broken up.

When I took my boys out of school (state school) for a week ahead of half term to go on a flotilla holiday in Greece the head was reluctant to agree at first but then decided that it would be a good experience for them.
At the first parent's evening after that the maths teacher asked us how it had gone and he seemed very interested. The eldest had, after all, taken a keen interest in navigation and there's not a little maths involved in that.

Well done! As I expressed in my earlier post the state school system no longer encourages the rounded education of pupils, but rather just sterile instruction to meet the whim of whoever controls the Qualifications and Assessment Authority at any particular time and they bow to the latest whim of the Secretary of State for education! A real tragedy! So many learning experiences closed off by sterile beaurocracy!

Now c'mon, some people have only just had the book delivered and you go and give the story away /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
