Emsworth Yacht Harbour

Yes, great place to keep a boat. We were there 2 years and only our size has made us move. There's a cill at the entrance so you need to time your departures and arrivals, no great problem.

5 minutes into town, 2 swindleries within pace and more pubs and food than you can shake a stick at. Lovely town and friendly locals plus plenty of boating expertise. Tacktick are based there, as are we. Plenty shops for wine & groceries also.

Highly recommended.

I'll agree - a nice little basin with some great public footpaths - one goes right round Thorney Island - superb if you want to do some wildlife watching.

Look out for the seals on your way in, I haven't seen them this year but I gather they are around.

Its a reasonable walk from the basin into town (not far, but a brisk 5 minutes!), but there is a chandlers on site.

Don't know what the visitors charges are like as we just use the place to get lifted in and out!

Yes, I go along with all that has been said above. We were in Emsworth for 5 years, only leaving for the same reason as Tom.

It is a very very peacfull location. Getting in and out just needs a bit of planning. We used to arrive at the boat on a Fri evening load up, then depending on tide leave that evening, or in some cases around midnight! We would motor down to the Harbour Conservancy bouys and spend the night there, another treasure of Chi harbour on a moon lit night. This would allow us an early start on the Sat morning.

Another major benifit of being on the Emsworth or Northney side of Chichester harbour is the lack of need to join a trafic jam on a Sunday evening, its easy to get back to your mooring when compared to Itchenor and Birdham, the M25 of the harbour.

Agree with the other positive comments. Was in there for 10 years before moving to a swinging just outside. Showers/pontoons/electrical have improved dramatically in that time. Access is typically about 2hours either side, obviously depending on draft, but even at 1.2m it is possible to get neaped on an extreme tide..

If just visiting Chi Hbr and not needing marina facilities, there's now a visitor pontoon which nearly always has room on what were the last two piles before Emsworth, but quite a dinghy ride ashore (free HM taxi at weekends). Also a 'new' short stay pontoon (2hrs, free) right up at the Millpond within a few hundred yards of the town.

Yes, indeed does dry. Access is about +/- 3.5hrs at 1.2m draft. On average tides there is still enough water to get a dinghy up to it from the channel moorings under oars (but not from drying 'pool' moorings opposite).

It's not unusual for shallowish boats (and fishing boats) to overtide against the pontoon (presumably with HM permission). Whether space available is a gamble, and this July/Aug the 'Solar Powered' trip boat will be based there, so even less room. (they've just spent a fortune putting in a new electrical supply to be able to charge it up, which rather amuses me!).
