Has anybody been through the Ems – Jade Kanal. If so I would be grateful for any info. I hope to make it into the Baltic this year and want as many alternative routes as possible. This year I went through the Delfzijl – Stavoren mast stande route which was a lot better than being storm bound for a few days.

I believe, not certain, that you have to lower the mast for this. We made it to the Baltic this year, came back via the "wats" from Nordeney to Delfzijl and canals all the way to Ijsselmeer. The wats seemed to be OK at our draught of 1.4 metres but slow, crossing one per high tide.

Also, not sure that Jade to Ems is very helpful. The problem is getting out of Cuxhaven in a W or NW, believe me that in a F5 against the ebb it is impossible unless you have a very large vessel.

There are canals to go all the way from Cuxhaven to Delfzijl and then on to the SW of the Netherlands. And yes, you have to lower your mast for this. I have never done it but many others have. Denmark is a very popular cruising destination for people who keep their boat in the N of the Netherlands and many take the inland waterways as not to loose any time on the way there and back due to bas weather. Perhaps somebody who knows about literature could post here?

Havnt been through,(boat is the wrong size), I thinnk max draft is about 1.50 ish & seem to remember fixed bridges of about under 4 mtr, but the canal is listed in B Sheffields book on German inland waters, published by imray. excellent book for all german waterways.

good luck & have fun

Get yourself to the Baltic; you'll love it! My boat is winterewd at a smashing marina at Augustenborg north of Flensburg after a great year's sailing. The Ems/Jade canal is a bind according to some Danes I met who'd done it. They said it was boring, time consuming and you need to lower your mast. Get to Lauwersoog (top end of Lawesrmeer in N.Friesland), and go outside the N. German islands, either to Cuxhaven or to Cuxhaven via Helgoland.

That's the way we went. With prevailing W - NW winds, going is not the problem. Coming back is a different kettle of fish altogether. We waited in Cuxhaven for three days, then couldn't get out to sea from Norderney because of big seas breaking across the channel.

Fully agree about the Baltic, though. Fabulous cruising area.

Emden to Wilhelmshaven isnt worth the trouble..I took Sula through the Jade a couple of years ago and found barely enough water (4 ft9 draft) and mast down is a must . its only a few bridges at the Wilhelmshaven end that open

Very flat, very boring, and when I went through ...the first third was 2inches thick in duckweed!

It took two days to get though ..and I learned how to clean the intake filter on the run !..it buggered the filter up though!

The only interesting bit was the barge roundabout ! 4 locks coming into a central circular pool from differant directions

Small trading barges still go up to Aurich and are restricted to 3k, its a hell of a job to get past as the canal is so narrow .....YOU can do 4k !

But the guys in the yacht club near the bridge in Wilhelshaven GREAT PEOPLE !
