We are interested in properties with berth in Empuriabrava which is in the Bay of Roses
on the Costa Brava I believe. Has anyone first hand knowledge of this location and
any advice ?. The thought of keeping you boat in your own berth on a canal with direct
access to the Med sounds great but what are the pitfalls ? C G N

Great place - property somewhat expensive but local eating out and provisioning good and relatively cheap. Have had motor cruiser and studio flat there for some years. Good local cruising and only short trip to France. Weather generally good between say May and end of September with odd tramuntana to be wary of. Easy drive from UK also Gerona Airport within about 45 minutes. Large German presence plus many French, Spanish (naturally) and a sizeable number of Brits both permanent residents and short or long term visitors either with or without boats.

Thank you Arden. I assume a tramuntana is a wind probably generated from the Pyrenees ?
I trust they can be forcast.
We plan to travel out in March and have made contact with a British company who both
build properties in and around the area and also act as brokers or estate agents if you like
for vendors. We shall be looking for a property with 14-15m berth, hopefully around 150-200k ?

We rented property in Empurabrava for three years, towing our boat down there and had a great time. The downside was organised crime. We had several friends who suffered from break in's and general pilfering. We also observed gangs operating on several occasions. It didn't stop us having repeated holidays there but do put security at the top of the list when selecting an apartment.
Also some of the outer apartments take a long time (at 3 knots) to get to the sea which is fine for the first few times because the villas are interesting but it can get tedious.
However lots to do, lots of stuff for teenage kids as well. Excellent Scuba diving from the Medas Island (you need a permit from Estartit). Also opportunities to rent out the property to recover some of the outgoings.
Have a great time

I've spent a day there last year when we got caught by the weather on our way to Menorca.

My impressions as a visitor were excellent. Good selection of restaurants and shops, staff freindly and helpful and lots for the kids to do (Though I was wary of letting them go in the inflatable because of the large volume of traffic.)

Leaving the canals at 6am with a fantastic sunrise and the wife and kids asleep was one of the highlights of my holiday!!
