Just completed another delivery, this time from Hamble to Barcelona. Apart from feeling the affects of storm Babet the trip was uneventful. So uneventful that it struck me that we'd seen very little marine life, and far less than usual. No Sunfish, no Portuguese Men-o-War, no Orcas, no tuna. All we had in two weeks was a solitary flying fish, a small pod of Pilot whales and a few Dolphins (and not many of those either).

It left me feeling a little uncomfortable.....

You should come to the empty Med....crystal clear waters practically devoid of live....with fishing on an industrial scale

That explains the med part of the trip but Atlantic coast usually plenty to see. OP? What was the routing? long way offshore maybe?

Not offshore really, apart from Biscay. Rest of the time we were within 20nm of the cost. We stopped overnight at Bayona for fuel, and had vague plans to call at Cascais (just because it's lovely) but pushed on to Gib instead. After that just headland hopping round the coast to Badalona.

It's a route I've travelled many times and there's always been something interesting to see in the water (a Sei whale was the highlight a few years ago). But this time it really was quiet.

I've read that the total weight of fish landed each year actually peaked at the tail end of the days of fishing under sail. People have eaten all the fish, it's as simple as that.

A tiny fraction of the China fishing fleet puts to sea....

China has a pretty vast coastline and that fleet is probably smaller than what we have in Cornwall. Not even sure why you felt it suitable to bring the Chinese into the discussion.

There is much worry in the ecological world about the immense size and aggressiveness of their fishing fleet
As there is about the French or British fleets, which are relevant to this thread about Biscay. Dragging China into it needlessly just seems unnecessary and a bit xenophobic.

Still confused about the relevance to the thread. You just seem to be digging at China.
OK add Spain, Morocco and Ecuador, big fleets I've seen in action.

Anyway, the waters around the Canary Islands are well stocked with all sorts of marine life, I'm happy to report.

Question for those that visit, French, Portugese and Spanish marinas always were well stocked with grey mullet. Inedible to most tastes...mebbe not to Chinese :)......is this still so?

The thread was about lack of life in the seas....everyone is guilty...but let’s start with the one with the biggest spoon
America then? Or the French? If you're going to say China, go and grab us some statistics to back up your statements rather than a picture which frankly smacks of anti Chinese propaganda. I reported your post, it's thoroughly irrelevant to a thread about Biscay and your attitude just seems racist.

You reported me ?......I actually didn’t think anybody did that.....in fact whenever others have suspected someone of reporting them, I have always defended them....by saying that the mods actually read everything. You are right to confront me personally if you don’t like what I say...I respect that....but grassing on me?....that’s a bit low
