Does anyone use a 230v submersible pump as their emergency solution.

How good was it?

How is it setup?

Is it significantly better than a DC solution?
 
I have a Honda WX10 water pump in the locker. Takes up little space and is self powered. Useful for wash downs away from a water supply as well.
Just a thought.
 
Problem with a 230v unit is powering it when the boat is flooding. OK if there's maybe a generator on deck powering it direct but, I wouldn't want to be in a boat with a live ring main and water slopping around.
 
We have at our club an emergency Honda fire pump for pumping out boats. It is heavy and has about 3 inch hose. It is difficult to get it primed but once pumping will pump mind boggling amounts of water out of a boat. It won't get the dregs out however due to large sized intake hose. So we bought a 240vAC pump for emergencies. This actually drops the pump into the bilge. It has a natty water proof switch and supply cord. While no where near as powerful as the Honda is light and quick to deploy and moves a lot of water.
The concept here being to protect boats in the marina where 240vAC power is available.
The 240vAC pump is an indcution type motor no brushes so would be very inefficient/ get hot on any inverter or generator with other than a pure sine wave.
i think for actual on board at sea type wok a 12c DC pump would be best. good luck olewill
