When I left the boat in Spain last Autumn I met a very friendly local. He was keen to advise on an engine problem and offer hospitality aboard his adjacent boat. He made quite a few observations about other aspects of my boat which he felt needed attention. After I returned to the UK he mailed me with a progress report on the things he had done and hoped to do with my agreement. I was at pains to point out I did not want to become indebted to him but he insisted that he was retired, had loads of time on his hands, loved working on boats (ex-maintenance engineer) and his wife was happy for him to be out of the house!
Now I'm back aboard I can see that he has done many, many things - the vast majority of which are welcome 'tweeks'. He won't take any money. How can I demonstrate my gratitude other than with profuse thanks?
