Are the French as negative about her as some of her British detractors?
For example this was posted on Channel Four News forum:
Ellen's fawning press coverage Roasted - 1st post - 8 Feb 2005 17:37
Isn't this Ellen MacArthur press a load of sickening rubbish? Comparing Ellen's feat with Robin Knox Johnson's or Francis Chichester or even Francois Joyon's achievements is ridiculous. Ellen had constant outside assistance from a huge back-up team, telling her amongst other things what course to steer, where the best wind was and what sails to put up. Francois Joyon didn't have a shore team as such, and crucially had no outside weather assistance. To compare Ellen with Chichester and Knox Johston is like comparing Scott of the Antarctic to the latest man to ski backwards to the south pole in a mickey mouse costume, or whatever they're up to at the South Pole nowadays. Did anyone else want to smash in the TV when Ellen whined "Its Christmas day and I can't even talk to anyone on my satellite phone!!" She and all who praise her demean the spirit of adventure and the memories of the truly great seamen and adventurers. With regard to her sailing ability, whilst she is clearly "plucky" please remember Ellen has NEVER won a single handed race - success re this record would appear to be based on her ability to fund fast boats and big support teams through the unprecedented (in sailing) sponsorship she enjoys through being a tiny woman who cries a lot. - Its a shame that money isn't channelled to those in sailing who are genuinely talented and really deserve it. If we want to celebrate whats great in sailing, lets vote 2x gold medal winner Ben Ainslie sportsman of the year!

What about:-
2000 Europe1 New Man STAR - 1st Open 60 Class.
2002 Route du RHum - 1st Open 60 Class.
Don't they count? What she achieved is still truely outstanding, even with the outside assistance. If the money she raised from Kingfisher plc wasn't use by her, it would disappear into an inane TV AD campain, not be used for deserving sailing causes.
