...many years ago Ellen was displaying her yacht on the pool at London BS (the one she sailed around UK on) and during the build-up of the Show I was also working there and I helped her rig it up as she was having a few problem - my, how she has come on since then !!

I wonder if she still remembers me...?!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

another fame claim here.

yeah, well, once i was having a nice breakfast in Yarmouth down a side street and EM came in, possibly to pick up some sandwiches or summink, not sure, and then she went out again. I remember saying "er did you see, that was Ellen Macarthur, that was" and Swmbo said "Who?". So, obviously, me and Ellen, we're really close.

Seriously though, i do have one claim to fame in that years ago, Fatima Whitbread was my girlfriend. Yes really! However, she chucked me...

Yeah well. Me and SWMBO were in Cherbourg 2 years ago before Ellen did that race to Italy. She got off the boat with a boyfriend (Ellen that is!) came up the paserelle and SWMBO said "Good Luck"! and Ellen said "Thanks very much"

So I'm actually married to someone who's friends with Ellen!

How about that then!

RKJ and loneliness at the top

I spect he was overawed and bewildered, in the same way any ordinary person would be if a famous person such as yourself suddenly seemed to recognise them. Sadly, i hear that the same applies elsewhere, and that contrary to the popular image, many very famous people don't actually have many acquanitances that they could call "real friends" or in extreme cases such as yours, no friends whatsoever.

We were there in Cherbourg too and waved at her from a distance We also have TWO signed and dedicated copies of her book from her book signing evening in Poole. That must put us into the Best Friends category!

Lovely lady and one very tough cookie.

I have breathed the same air - possibly; sailed through the same oceans, albeit 10- 20-30 yrs before Ellen.

Then again, she could have been the youngster I saved from sailing her dinghy out of the harbour that stormy day....epecially when I just could have started it all, by saying 'wait until your're a wee bit older lass' /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

A donf Ellen - me old buddy......

I have an UNSIGNED copy of Ellen's book which is more valuable because of rarity value

[/ QUOTE ] I gave mine away.... Before I read it!
