ELLEN MACARTHUR\'S RETURN TO FALMOUTH - DETAILS
The Events Square in Falmouth, in conjunction with the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Port Pendennis Marina, is gearing up for the expected return of Ellen MacArthur early next week.
From Saturday everyone will be on stand-by for a huge welcoming party by the thousands of well-wishers who have followed her progress, as she has sailed, single-handed, non-stop around the world.
Falmouth has been chosen as the return point, following the spectacular turn out when she left in late November, for its excellent facilities and the enthusiasm of those connected with the bid to get TeamEllen to finish here.
The big build up launches into action on Saturday when a huge daylight screen just outside the Maritime Museum and on the Events Square will start counting down the days, hours and minutes of Ellen’s world record breaking attempt and will give progress reports on where and how she is doing.
On Ellen’s arrival into Falmouth the screen will have live feed from the helicopters and strategically positioned cameras tracking her around the Pendennis Headland and into the Carrick Roads and will capture her first steps on dry land. Ellen will also give her supporters and fans a treat by climbing on board a stage in front of the screen to meet the sea of faces that have been behind her challenge before she goes into her press conference. Live reports of all the activity from the press conference will not only be beamed around the world but will also be fed onto the day screen keeping all the supporters on the Events Square right in the heart of the action.
In addition to numerous national TV stations, with their satellite trucks, over 60 international journalists and 100 national journalists are expected to descend on the town to cover this momentous occasion.
Mike Rangecroft, for Events Square Management, comments: ”This is a great opportunity, especially in the middle of winter, to put Falmouth on the map once more, as a strategically positioned port, with the right facilities, for an event such as this.”
Tamsin Loveless, Head of Communications at the Maritime Museum says: "Ellen's return to Falmouth is historic, even in the unlikely event she doesn't cross the line and break Joyon's record, she's still returning a heroine not only because of her huge achievement, but, also because of the records she's broken on her epic journey. Falmouth hasn't seen sailing history like this since 1969, when Sir Robin Knox-Johnson returned to Falmouth after his solo non-stop round the world record and for the town to be at the very heart of such an adrenalin fuelled event and the focus of the world's media - well, could we ask for more?"
The Museum and Events Square are asking everyone to get involved. “It would be wonderful if everyone came out to support her, to cheer her in, to escort her boat when she sails into harbour and show what Falmouth thinks of her world record achievements. The Event Square and Museum are perfectly located to get close and personal to all the action and we invite everyone to show their support and celebrate her return,” concludes Tamsin.
In celebration of her return, the Museum will be offering discounted entry to everyone during the period that she is here. 'Ellen days' have been created to offer visitors the opportunity to get close to the action and to experience sailing history in the making: to see Ellen come alongside and step onto dry land for the first time from the Museum's perfect viewing platform - the Look-out tower; to see her record breaking B&Q boat moored alongside Port Pendennis Marina and to experience the buzz of the global media capturing Ellen's every movement. Entry is just £5 for adults and £3 for seniors, students and children while she’s here.
Over half-term the Museum will also be offering visitors the opportunity to sail around the world with a new sailing challenge in the waterfront gallery. Take up the helm and battle the winds on a scaled-down replica of Ellen's journey and if you prefer dry land, try the Museum's new round the world trail throughout the Museum - crossing the equator has never been so easy!
If you want to witness sailing history and support Ellen MacArthur as she comes into Falmouth then keep an eye on the TeamEllen website www.teamellen.com or call the general enquiries line on 0870 063 0218 (operational from Friday 4 February).
