Excuse the idiot question but can someone tell me the difference between an Elizabethan 29 and an Elizabethan 30? The first person to say twelve inches will be visited by the cyber-heavies!!

Any info gratefully recd and any suitable websites to visit.

Many thanks for your response. I saw an article recently which made the 30 sound pretty good. Wondered if those abilities were extant in the 29 and 31. Will dig deeper!

Thanks again

The 31 is a very good sea boat. I have sailed both an aft cabin tiller steered one on which she was able to hold the spiniker without any problems in 30 knots of true wind. And a centre cockpit version with wheel steering and a ketch rig in fairly large seas in the Moray firth. Both versions were a delight to sail if slightly rolly in a following seas (what isn't). I personally prefered the tiller steering.

The Elizabethan 29 is an early 1960's Kim Holman designed long keeler. Very similar to a Folkboat in her lines, just a few feet longer. Accomodation is a tad basic, more like a snug in a pub than a palatial travel inn, if you get my meaning. They were built mostly by Peter Webster in Lymington as were most Elizabethans.

The 30 or 9 metre is a completly different animal. Designed by David Thomas (Sigmaman) as a yacht to compete in Half Ton Cup Racing it has now become a capable safe fast cruiser. The Elizabethan 9 metre type, generally were the outright racers having a deeper draft and trim tab on the keel and the 30's were the cruiser version. The 30 or 9 metre has a more modern layout when gauged to the 29 but certainly has more beam.

For a 29 expect to pay £9-13K
For a 30 £12-19K
I agree with the previous posting on the 31.
Hope this helps but more info on the www.eoa.org.uk

Best of Luck
