Eliche Radice folding prop torque

Hi all,

Does anyone have an inkling of the correct torque for a 14x9 Eliche Radice 2 blade folding prop going on a 110s saildrive? I've seen a few things quoting 220NM which seems an awful lot for the ~16mm thread on the shaft. I understand how critical this nut is but still...

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

It does not seem too excessive when you consider that the 12mm wheel nuts on my car require 120 nm, If you relate that to the core area of the bolts that is not much different. The real difference may be metallurgy. The car wheel studs are high tensile steel, and the sail drive shaft may or may not such high tensile strength. What is the propeller made of? If it is bronze, then again it may need less torque to avoid the risk of stripping the thread.

I used the correct (large) torque figure when fitting mine some years ago. I wish I hadn't - I haven't been able to get the thing off since. The first time I tried (after two seasons I think) I was applying a lot of energy trying to get the thing to move when the socket in the nut rounded. Since then I've tried quite a few of the usual techniques for dealing with a recalcitrant and rounded nut and nothing has worked. I suspect that, when the time comes, I'll have to cut the thing off, or throw it away still on the shaft and get a new shaft as well as a new propeller. Still, at least the prop won't fall off.

Get a hole cutter slightly larger than the threaded section of the shaft and trepan the nut.
