electronic part needed, non boaty - apologies

i need a part for my garage remote
it's a shiny rectangular box, aprox 12x5x3mm with two leads to solder

written on in is VTOP 26.99 MAP

where do i buy these thing please ??
i've send off for the manufacturer to replace them, they charge 25 + postage !!

Does the manufacturer give a description of what it does? Is there a company name anywhere on or within the product, or etched on the PCB? I assume you've googled on the information you posted so I won't waste my time repeating that.

Normally a shiny rectangular box with two leads is a capacitor, how do you know this is the faulty part or is it obvious? Burnt etc.
I would try maplins or RS spares.

It is possible that the component is a 26.99 MHz crystal. If so it is probably available from RS, Farnell or maybe even Maplin. If it is a crystal then the case will be metal with both leads coming out of the bottom through small glass feedthroughs.

the part has been replaced once by garage chaps, i can see the solder 'repair'
it did used to work, now i have one broken pin and another with a dry solder.

i bet it's a crystal, the pins come out through glass / shiny holes.

It is certainly a cheap industrial crystal 'cut' to resonate in the ISM band and as such are quite cheap.

You might find a shop that specialises in 27MHz Radio-Control model aircraft and boats might be able to help by purchasing the correct xtal from thier supplier? Even if you temporarily replace with a Xtal from the RC shop, it might get you out of bother The Rx will be a cheap TRF receiver and has a 'front' end wide enough to receive a transmission slightly outside its intended band.

It's in a style 'J' can with wires not pins comining out of the bottom. the numbers on the side will tell you the frequency. The numbers are a bit too much out of focus to see clearly from your photo.

The coil round the ferrite rod on the left of your photo is possibly acting as an aerial, in which case the xtal may be acting as a band pass filter so that only your remote can operate the garage doors. In which case you will need to get the same freq. xtal or you may end up needing to retune the remote. Do you have an xtal in the remote? They might be a matched pair.

You don't want your doors opening every time someone goes passed your house with a remote controlled toy. So it is unlikely to be in the same freq. band.

Take the circuit board with you when you go shopping.
