The speed and log on my boat are two separate instruments and they are in different places. Two wires from the paddle wheel go to the log unit ,which is a mechanical counter, and is mounted at the chart table. There is then a four core cable which runs from this unit to an anologue water speed unit fitted in a console over the main hatch. The unit at the chart table has got damaged and the water speed unit has stopped working. Can I connect the paddle wheel directly to the water speed instrument thus bypassing the log unit at the chart table.????

It might work, but I have a funny feeling that the speed display needs the distance input to be able to calculate said speed, and if the distance counter isn't working it's a non starter.

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

What is the manufacturers name? Perhaps if we know which kit you have, we can give you an answer.

The instruments are by Mariner Electronics of Lymington who no longer seem to exist. I did find a Phone No. for them and an address neither of which helped me to contact them.

Sorry, I've never heard of them. Unless they were taken over by another company, and someone can tell you who, I think you may be out of luck.

Try posting on the "Wanted" fourm for a replacement, or you could try a search on e-bay. Perhaps you might find something at a boat jumble.

Other than that, I'm afraid I can't be any more help.

I suspect the set up is this: the paddlewheel is sending electrical pulses to the control box which is adding a time component to output speed, or it may just be converting the pulses into an electical current which increases with the frequency of the pulse. In either case the control box is necessary.

Mariner no longer exists but spares may be available from boat jumbles - Beaulieu is comming up. Other than that all I can say is it's probably time for an update. The NASA Clipper models are cheap and cheerful and reasonably reliable if all you want is basic speed and distance information.
