My thanks to Zack for refering me to a company that manufactures lightning protection equipment for marine electronics. I thought I would share this information with those interested.
The company is Seacom Inc. ( www.seacom.us ). The company advertises on its website, that their products will protect marine eletronics from lightning damage whether from direct hit or induce currents.
Being skeptical given all the responses I recieved from you all on lightning protection, I did give Seacom a call to see these products were more "snake oil" like the "fuzzy brush", or if this was really something different. I was able to talk to thier chief engineer, he was pretty helpful and explained to me how thier products worked and offered other conviencing information that pursaded me to at least try thier products out. In fact, given the cost of my last deductible to repair my gear, these products may be a cheaper form insurance.
We'll see....

I like the fuzzy brush idea ...

Have they had their product tested by a reputable independent lab?

Is it possible to generate the power of a lightning strike in a lab?

What is the ratio between the cost of the product and the value of your electronics?
If the ratio is lower (eg 1/100) than the risk of a lightning strike (guess 1/1000000) over the lifetime of the electronics then I would question the value of the product?

Am I being too dismal?
