I thought the following was more likely to be answered on here as all you stinkies have huge pots of dosh to spend and will all have the latest kit!

question: why does my maptech charts only have tidal data till end of 2003,
I realise that it would be impossible to put on more than say 5/10 years worth whatever... but that means I will have to purchase new charts every year just to keep the tidal data up to date! is this correct or am I missing something? Do all chart companies do the same?

It may be a way of ensuring that you get chart corrections. Plotter Cmap ctgs can be updated at about a third the cost of new (so still V. expensive!!)

Tidal data (for tide generating forces) can be calculated from just the date; there's no need to store vast amounts of data. I used to have a program which could work out the tide generating forces over several centuries. Of course, the port data could have changed over this time, but generally the tides were still within half an hour or so.

Is this another scam??

The cost of chart software is expensive & if you have to update it every year, even at say 20% discount, (That is what Maptech has offered!) then I am going to throw all my toys out the pram!

I might add that there is no mention of this in their adds

What to do???

Re: Who\'s Maptech?

I use CMap, and as others have said, the thing does its calcs from the date, and AFAIK has tidal info available for the rest of creation...
