A week or so ago I purchased a plotter bundled with a Navionics chart of the UK and Ireland. Packaged with the chart was an upgrade offer, (to a larger chart ), this offer expired May last year. This aroused suspicions about the date of the chart, although I am not bothered about the larger area. The chart does have a date code, meaningless to me. I checked the chart for an NM correction issued over a year ago, ( buoyage changes near Cuan Sound ). This had not been incorporated.
I have e-mailed Navionics and the dealer, so far without response. Before I chase this up with them, what is the forum's view on what should be expected in terms of corrections when an electronic chart is purchased.

What corrections would you expect on a paper chart?

Paper charts I've purchased from Agents have been corrected to the most recent NM.

It's my experience that electronic charts are frequently out of date and the only way of obtaining such corrections is by purchasing an upgrade of the chart.

Even then you'll be unlikely to get the most recent updates of less than 12 months old.

Hence the reason for the disclaimer whenever you open recreational chartplotter software.

The proper commercial stuff is quite different, up to date, but the price is one most boaters are unprepared to pay.

I too, have Navionics electronic chart, and found several omissions, particularly in the Outer Hebrides. Things like the causeway between South Uist and Eriskay, and the bridge to Scalpay, both of which have been in place for about 10 years. Then there was an extra island in Loch Scavaig, and several datum irregularities.

If you go to Navionics website, there is provision for reporting errors, and I believe that if you are the first to report an error, you are eligible for a free update. I have done this, and been given updated charts. Worth a try, anyway.
