Electronic anti seasickness watch thingies

My wife uses elasticated bands on her wrists to prevent sea sickness. Clearly ther is no scientific basis for this. However if you really believe it will work it often does. If the band contains some electronics it's much easier to believe in.

In my experience, they seem to work for some but not others.
Jenny , my partner was new to sailing three years ago and at that time suffered terribly with motion sickness and was even sick when travelling in the back of the car. Stugeron helped, but we still regularly had '5 bag' trips form Portsmouth to Cowes. We brought one of the watches ( £95 I think) and I can only say that for her they have been a complete miracle. She now has no problem with any kind of normal sea state and doesn't feel the slightest bit queasy even in a rolly anchorage. We spent 5 weeks 'out' last year ( France/West country) with no problems.
I don't know why they work, and I have heard of people for whom they don't so there are no guarantees. They send a mild shock up the palm of your hand to your fingertips. The strenght is adjustable, but I'd check first if they are suitable for the kids.
Otherwise, I'd recommend trying to keep the kids busy (helping to steer, pull ropes etc.) as this also seems to work for some.

I purchased one of thes watch things a couple of years ago, but found it totally impractical in conditions that made me sick ie: night passage, lumpy sea and oilskins etc. These things need to be carefully fixed on a particular spot on ones wrist, if moved they no longer give the requisite tingle. With oilskins and tight wristed clothing the thing never stayed in place and was quite useless. Maybe okay for a passenger, but not for a busy crewmember !
 
You are look for something called ReliefBand, they work very well. You will need to be quick if you want to get hold of them as the maker in America has given up and it will be about a year until they are available again I am told.
 
Usually takes a day or two to get over queasiness for me, so I splashed out best part of £100 on one. It's been worth it overall - seemed very effective on some occasions and less so on others. Strapped it on others who were suffering and seemed to alleviate from heaving to just queasy. There might be some acupressure effect although acupuncture had no effect on my bad back. Might be a placebo effect. Dunno.
The patches are pretty good - put em on well before and any drowsiness might not last into sailing time.

They did not work on the Myth buster's experiment a while back but Ginger and even a vitamin tablet placebo worked.
Never been seasick but I do feel out of balance when back on the hard

Save your money and try a plain elastic band around the wrist; a co-worker swears by it. Figure the irritation of it keeps your mind off your stomach. That and keep busy and you'll have no worries.

I shipped a couple in from America via e-bay at a steal. I have used the elasticated versionsfor the past 15 years on West Coast of Scotland ferries) as well (even when scuba diving as the kelp going back and forth made me queezie. I also gave a shot of a watch one to a mate's partner as she was getting early morning sickness: Sorted her out as well. I don't like taking Stugeron due to side effects, buy one and try it, if it dosent work for you then stick it on e-bay! They work in our family whether it is the belief or not. Cheers

Not too sure what to think then as they have tried the cheapo wrist bands with no effect at all !
There doesn't seem to be a any real evidence as to whether these electronic work or not /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Get the kids a bag of non-electronic crystalised ginger each, it works and it tastes good! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
