Has anyone used the NASA Marine EML-2 electromagnetic speed transducer? There's almost nothing on the web, the one or two reviews said basically no problems.

Yes. Fouling is the issue. The face of the transducer should no AF so cleaning the 'ducer is a bit of a (regular) pain. So a regular armful of water. Keep the plug handy and well lubricated.

Given that GPS is not really a substitute unless you sail in currentless waters, is there any through-hull log for which fouling and/or cleaning is not a regular pain in the fundament? Is it even possible? I am starting to fantasise about finding an old trailing log and rigging it for NMEA-2000 just to avoid this...

I’ve had an Airmar ultra sonic speed transducer in my boat for the past 20 years. Connected to Raymarine instruments. I think it was originally a Raymarine part…..long time ago.

Interesting FWB... does that just go through ordinary antifoul then? It seems an expensive option but if it keeps working and avoids a lot of bother it might not be a bad use of the money...

I antifoul over it just as I do to the depth transducer. Absolutely maintenance free has worked for 20 years.
It‘s very sensitive, shows the current past the boat when at anchor.

I have the nasa eml . Brilliant. You antifoul it then just wipe the paint off the 3 stainless steel heads. As weed grows on the hull the display speed drops letting you know its time for a scrub. If it were a padIdle wheel it would stop altogether. Put the deck brush under the hull to clean the eml and off you go !

I asked a similar question last year on this thread with similar replies. Still not sure if it's worth changing from paddlewheel if it still needs cleaning.

My Airmar never needs cleaning. It’s just like the depth transducer, that never needs cleaning.

It’s important to antifoul the transducers, I use Tiger extra and the boat and transducers only get slime which has no effect on them.
