Electrical guru\'s,advice please?

Hi

My recent purchase (Bayliner 2858) has a retrofitted yanmar diesel installation with the standard Yanmar gauge panel at both upper and lower helm.

Problem is.........Both must be switched on to start her up,i.e I can start her up from either but the other must also be in the on position!

Now this to me does not make a lot of sense? unless its because the both panels have an hour meter fitted!

Has the installation been correctly wired? any advice appreciated.

Thanks
Rob

Sounds like a simple rogue wiring situation. A common plus or neg is usually used to power both switches. Sounds like the power goes to the first one and then the feed only occurs when its live as the second one is powered from beyond the switched on feed. Clearly they should be sourced independantly and not as a piggy back supply.
Panels off and check with meter when in different positions to see when the feed occurs and from which supply. Should be a simple fix once you have worked out whats going on.

Thats how a lot of yanmar and mercruiser installations are wired, with the lower helm as the master station, be carefull what you alter as you may start an electrical feedback situation between the upper and lower helm.

Looks probably correct to me if it means you are able to stop the engine from either station (important safety issue). If they were wired in parallel then it is possible that this would not be the case if the unused helm was left switched on?

I have the 2958 with the yamaha's fitted, I have not yet fitted the ignition switch from the upper helm but yamaha has told me not to fit the key ignition but the stop start buttons instead in case of problems you are currently getting.

I think Sealine had a similar problem when they started using them. We made a diode pack for them, it was used for a year or two, then they altered the engine control or stoped using them as we have made non for a bit now.
Any Sealine owners with early engine installations should have a diagram in the handbook.

I'll have look what info I still have.

Check if it's the alarm circuits. The unit we made was to link low oil, sea water flow, and cold water temp, upper and lower stations with alarm and test switch. you may have the same reason as they found, and this was to get round powering both stations.

May not be, but an area to look.

Thanks all, sensible responses, but as i'm far more mechanicaly biased than electrical I guess I'll need to get a sparkie take a look as its a little over my head. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Electrical guru\'s,advice please?

The unit was to isolate the upper and lower stations from each other on the three alarm circuits as above.
I suspect that without the upper station on, the engine electronics are picking up a fault condition, hence a unit to isolate the two stations.

All the best in sorting.
