Electric Volvo Penta oil bilge pump to end my misery?

I've always struggled with oil change on our KAMD300's (and KAD42 before that). I've tried several manual pumps, including vacuum ones, but never had a very successful oil change, so I've decided that something new has to be tried. The biggest problem is getting enough oil out and the whole process taking too much time.

I had a chat with a local Volvo engineer who suggested an electric Volvo pump. I believe it's this. His comment went along the lines "like opening a tap" (referring to the rate at which the oil comes out).

Has anyone tried this? As far as I can tell, the hose is clamped into the dipstick tube, which presumably reaches to bottom of the oil pan to get as much oil out as needed. The pumps I've used so far have had a separate hose that goes inside the dipstick tube.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks!

I use one of the vacuum thingies that works well for me, however for any pump to work well the oil has to be hot otherwise your trying to pump treacle, just warming the engines on idle is not enough. Also don't use the dipstick tube you should have dedicated oil removal tube nearer the back of the engine.

Hi and thanks for replying! Yes, I've tried with hot engines but still it seems to take forever to get the oil out. By the sound of it, it's sucking too much air and only driplets of oil.

I don't think KAMD300 has a dedicated oil removal tube?

I don't normaly have a problem with air until you get to the last dregs which is to be expected, perhaps you need a new vacuum pump I use one these pelapump , i've tried electric pumps before and found them wanting, the pela works much better. Not familiar with KAD300's but my 2002 AD31's have tubes near the back of the engine and I think its a common part to all AD series Volvos.

I used the volvo electric pump on the AD31's of my last boat which had seperate tubes for sump draining. It was ok but found I had to prime the pump so became a messy process. The KAD 42's of my current boat just has the dipstick so invested in the 6 litre Pela pump and find it much easier, quicker and less messy. The volvo electric pump is gathering dust in my garage.

Need to push the tube well down into the sump, but I found that the 'ball shaped' Pela pump isn't much good.

The cylindrical pela one works a whole lot better (i have 1 of each type) and about 4 times the speed.

I put one in forwards, one in reverse, both at 1000rpm.
Pour yourself a glass of wine and read MBM or MBY.
After 10-15mins, temp is heading towards 80 which is good enough.

Trouble was in 10-15 mins 4 glasses of wine went down!
Then I got the Taste.
Then MBM made sense, even the 'What Next Skip' script!
Then the Wine got finished.
Then I couldn,t find tyhe Dipstick hole /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Then i fowned the wiskey boccle
Then I COULDN'T FIND THE top off of the whisky bottl and it wasnt worth changin th oil cos i was well oiled---HIC /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was so pissed I even believed me boat wouldn't fit under the bridges here

Then I realised its only a magazine and their airdraft figures ain't real /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I've tried with a similar to the cylinder-shaped Pela (can't remember the make), but with little results. The suction is fine, but too much air gets into the tube.

Maybe the problem is with using a separate tube in the first place. Have a look at this.

If the tube is stuck on the bend of the part 36, that might explain why I get so much air sucked in to the tube, presuming it therefore stays above the oil level.

So, clamping the tube into the dipstick tube would be better?

and get oil hot. Having looked at the volvo set up I can see why you are not getting the oil out, i.e. the 90 degree bend in the dip stick tube, find another way into the sump, on our Fords I use the Turbo dump pipe, do you have this on Volvo?

I use on of these: http://www.jabsco.com/products/marine/di...d_143/index.htm
Make sure the engine is in operating temp and you will have sucked up 80% within 10 minutes. The trick is to make sure the tube is just right at the lowest part of the sump. If you push it to far it will hit the wall in the sump and move up again.
Once there is only 1-2 liters left it starts to suck air as well but if you fiddle with the tube for a while longer I ususally get all but 0.5 liters out (my engines are at a slight angle so I can get the tube in the back end of the sump, if yours are flat you probably need to give up with a litre or more left in the engine.
Also, after you've run the engine it takes a bit of time before the oil has drained into the sump, if you wait to long it gets cold and if you are to quick you won't get all of it out.
