Is it possible to fit an electric toilet, for use when swmbo on board, with a manual backup hand pump for longer passages and in case of machine failure? I would have thought a manual override was a good idea, but can't see one advertised.

Just had one fitted yesterday to my Catamaran, There seems to be no manual over ride that I can see..

Yes, fit two, one manual and one electric.

I guess you could fit a Lavac with two pumps but you would need either a diverter valve or two skin fittings to take one or the other.

My electric toilet has functioned perfectly for four years, in regular use for half the year. Why are you expecting mechanical failure? When we did have an electric toilet failure many years ago, the shaft seal failed allowing the toilet contents into the motor, we used a bucket.

Why am I expecting failure? I think you've answered that yourself - 'shaft seal failed allowing toilet contents into the motor'! I don't fancy that!

But that was on a secondhand boat with an inherited toilet that had probably had 10 years of use. It was also a long time ago when I had not come to appreciate the benefit of carrying spares.

I don't think such an animal exists, but it's such a good idea that some manufacturer ought to pick it up as it would allay the fear of failure that probably puts many people off electric toilets.
This has now got me thinking. If you think of the standard Jabsco manual toilet, that has an electric conversion kit which just requires the old manual pump to be removed and the new electric one fitted. Now what if there was a 'Y' fitting that could be fitted onto the toilet base so that both pumps could be installed side by side. This would make a far from pointless YAPP for our resident engineers!

RM, Jabsco and others do electric conversion kits for their manual loos. I am thinking about fitting one to my RM.
It seems to be a direct replacement for the manual pump, so if you get a manual, upgrade it and keep the old pump you should be able to refit it if needed. Not quite swap and play but gives you a fallback.

I'm sure that I saw on the Lavac website that you can fit the electric pump inline with the manual one as they will happily pump through each other?

that is what we inherited with our current boat, the leccy bit leaks yuk and the little man told me his labour charge to rebuild it would cost more than a complete new electric conversion kit would cost , so we have justbought a brand new Twistn'lock manual one complete to replace the original which started as a manual Jabsco and had the conversion. The electric conversion is very noisy apart from leaking. I May buy a complete spare TwistN'Lock pump assembly to carry on board rather than a simple Jabscospares kit Kit as it would be a very simple swapover job if needed.

The electric conversion kit is almost as expensive as a complete new Lite electric toilet and nowhere as good.

I was going that route but got a reallygood price on a new manual TwistN'lock and the electric lLte Flush has no manual fallback option which the OP had asked for.It isn't rocket science to pump a manual either....

Warning, shore power is a dodgy idea !

A chap at Ryde marina was killed, electrocuted when the all - stainless ' vandal proof ' loo was wired up to the mains - by vandals...

With such a piece of kit involving horrible consequences if the thing packs up or in event of an electrical snag on the boat, I'd never dream of fitting an electric bog !
