I have long coveted the electric rope cutters/sealers used in chandlers but could not justify the expense. Lidl's have now provided me with a Soldering Gun PWG 600/8 that does the same job but at £7.99 about a tenth of the cost of the chandlers version. It comes complete with cutting head. Result: one happy sailor.

For some time I have been using an ALDI or LIDL gas soldering iron with a rope cutting blade, an excellent tool, bit more expensive but well under £20 if I remeber correctly

I bought one over a year ago. It works brilliantly, though the cutting blade is a bit short and gets too hot (i.e. bright red hot) if you hold the trigger too long. I keep meaning to make a longer, and cooler running, cutting tip.

Whip and cut or cut and back splice for me - I hate to see heat sealed ends on a rope - very unprofessional looking. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PS, I have had a couple of very nasty cuts on my hands from heat sealed rope ends (admittedly badly sealed ones)

A junior hacksaw blade held in a pair of mole grips/pliers and heated on the gas hob (at home or on boat) until red hot works well!

will be three happy sailors soon if they have them in stock!

I have one and it works well. Lidl seem to put them on special every few months (last time local to me was the 19th of June 08) so it may be worth asking if you can't see one on display.
