Now I've got shore power I'm looking at getting an electric kettle. Was thinking of a 3kw for quick boiling but not sure if this will be too much without tripping the power off so maybe should go for 2kw

Anyone have any advice or can recommend a kettle?

thanks

If you have the space go for one with a round base, rather than a tall thin one. Useful if it has a transparent section so that you don't overfill it for the amount of hot water you need. Steel always looks tatty after a month or two on board; and finally, reject any one with a lead which is less than 4ft length so that you can run the kettle tucked safely in a corner rather than having to run in in the middle of an open work surface.

A 3 kw is getting to the upper edge of some shorepower trip / cutoff limits; a smaller one just needs a bit of critical path analysis to ensure it reaches the boil when the toast is almost ready. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ] That'll be virtually all of them so be prepared to get a longer lead made up.

3KW will draw around 13A or so. If your shore power is fed from a 16A breaker you won't have much capacity left for other utilities. I would go for a slightly smaller one and live with extra few minutes it takes to boil. (2KW = 9A, roughly).

Go for a small cheapie, about 1 - 1.5L with 1.5-1.8kw. As it's a smaller size you don't need so much power to boil. Makes plenty brew for 4 - you should pay about £6 for one.
A 3kw will use plenty juice and boil in about 2 mins, but whats the hurry? Plus you'll save about £15 on price.
Happy dunking!

Then go to Tesco. £4.99/5 Years ago still fine, only draws about 6 amps. In Holland many marinas have 8amp shorepower anything bigger tan 1.8KW will blow.

We had the normal big household kettle, but had to remember to turn of the heaters in winter or the trip went. Now keep it in a locker in case we have a crowd onboard and use a two cup mini kettle. Takes a little longer, but why take the rat race to the boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
